Billboards
Billboards are a way to reach the public 365 days a year and if you are lucky, you will secure unused billboard space free in your market. As one major national billboard company's web site says “Outdoor advertising is great because you can't turn it off, throw it away, or click on the next page. That means your message is reaching consumers everywhere — all the time, everyday.”
There are two ways that you can obtain placement for the billboards:
Paid Placement
Outdoor advertising is expensive with prices ranging from $700- $10,000 per month depending on location and markets. However, if you pay for placement, you have the advantage of being able to select the location placement and length of time the billboard is to be displayed. To get a sense of what paid rates are go to a large national outdoor advertising company site such as Clear Channel. You will also find a “Media Buyers Guide” on the Clear Channel site that will outline things you need to know about buying outdoor advertsing space.
Public Service Billboards
The public service billboard is another way of obtaining public awareness of the InformationSTAT campaign. Outdoor advertsing companies often have unsold billboard space and they will run public service billboards in the same manner as print publications will run PSAs. While placement fees are free, you may be asked to pay the cost to produce the billboard ad in either paper or vinyl.
Don’t underestimate the impact that a billboard will have on your market. To identify what company owns which billboard space in your area you may want to visit the Outdoor Advertising Association of America’s membership rooster.
The artwork for two billboards has been produced to support the InformationSTAT campaign. In addition to billboard artwork, consider using this artwork to fit Metro/subway advertising, bus sides, taxi tops, or bus benches.
